About Swami Mohan Dass Ji Maharaj
SWAMI MOHAN DASS – A LIFE DIVINE
It goes without saying that God is omnipresent, omniscient and omnipotent. Nevertheless, He makes use of certain doubles or role models who could carry out His diverse but avowed roles or functions such as bestowing love and kindness, truth and knowledge upon His Creation. For instance, God could not be everywhere so He created mother. Likewise, He sends saints and sages to spread His Consciousness among the vastly scattered and suffering multitude in this world. Since these manifestations of God share certain divine qualities with Him, they are transcendental beings having the power to transcend barriers of time and place. In order to bring relief to the suffering humanity, they can work wonders and perform miracles with their metaphysical powers that cannot be explained in terms of the existing physical sciences.
One such recent manifestation of God that shines like the pole star in the spiritual firmament is Shri Shri 1008 Yogiraj Swami Mohan Dass Ji Maharaj who was a fully enlightened spiritual master and an exalted Yogi of the stature the world has rarely seen. He perfected himself in the highest state of union or Samadhi known as Nirvikalp Samadhi in the yogic and spiritual word. It is explained as a transcendental state beyond mind in which a Yogi experiences oneness with the divine existence. He had mastered the Khechri Mudra which is said to be the most difficult Mudra in the Yogic texts. These attributes make him a yogi of the highest order in the spiritual and religious realm.
Swami Ji was born in Bujah, a small remote village in Rajasthan in India on the eighth day of the bright moon fortnight (Kartik Shukla Ashtami) in November1918. He inherited the attributes of the highest order from his ancestral lineage and religious background right from his birth. His father, Rana Bal Singh was a descendant of the Khichi clan, prominent among the Raj Ranas of Rajasthan, while his birth was blessed by Mahatma Balak Dass Ji, a renowned sage of the area. The latter named Him "Mohan" which literally means one who captivates every heart, and is one of the names associated with Lord Krishna.
When Swami Mohan was only two years old, he was sent to the Ashram of Baba Balak Dass and thereafter at the age of seven, he came in the custody of Baba Bharat Dass who initiated him in the religious order and renamed him as “Mohan Dass”. It was the beginning of his spiritual quest. With a strong resolution to pursue his spiritual austerities, to attain siddhi and realise God, Mohan Dass made his way to the deep forests of Pandupol, fraught with tigers, lions and other predators. He performed hard penance and severe austerities for several years surviving only on leaves, wild fruits and tree roots in the area around Tapkeshwar Bandh, the Bharthari cave and between Alwar and Jaipur.
During his penance days, Swami Mohan Dass had Narsingh Darshan, vision of Lord Vishnu in the form of a lion. Finally He had a vision of the luminous form of a divine sage in the form a child who presented him with silver clogs (a pair of silver sandals or khrau), a set of iron tongs (chimta) and gave blessings in the shape of self-realization. His constant endeavour and practices in the yogic domain led him to the highest stage of Nirvikalp Samadhi, the state of liberation from the worldly bonds of body, mind and emotions.
Having attained Siddhi and self realisation, Swami Ji returned to the social fold to share his spiritual treasure with the suffering, the needy and the unawakened masses. He chose Naam Simran (chanting or reciting the divine name) and Sankirtan (devotional singing) as the main mode and medium of bestowing his divine blessings. He would uplift the sagging spirits of the devotees through his soulful singing and inspire them to lead a full and dynamic life. His presence was always refreshing and rejuvenating not only for his devotees but also for everyone who happened to be in his contact. Swami Ji used his yogic powers to heal the ailing people as well as for the spiritual benefit of his devotees. There are many accounts of miraculous healing done by him going around. Even patients on their death-beds would recover to a healthy and holistic life.
Swami Mohan Dass set up his ashrams at Jalandhar in Punjab, Jaipur in Rajasthan, Hardwar in Uttarakhand in India and Brampton (Canada). These places are the cardinal centres of religious activities and social service. Help is provided to the poor, the needy, educationally deprived and the victims of natural disasters through these ashrams. Swami Ji dedicated his whole life in the pursuit of service to the humanity and he continued this mission till his last breath. He set up a trust in his life time so that these activities may also go on after him.
He left his physical frame on 12th October, 2013. It is worthy to note that he was born on Gopa Ashtami and left for his heavenly abode on Durga Ashtami. His divine grace and blessings are always available to his devotees though he is no more in the physical form.
